Venues
There is a satisfyingly familiar look about Saturday's opening
events, with the traditional and colourful Band and Brolly Parade
getting the show on the road round about lunchtime. Next, the Pub
Trail and Holywood Library sessions, featuring both local and
visiting musicians, with the Saturday programme being brought to
a close by the Rae Brothers New Orleans Jazz Band and the Swedish
Jazz Kings, at a late-evening concert/dance in the town's Queen's
Hall Leisure Complex.
Not a lot of travelling required to enjoy the super Sunday
supplement of quality jazz. One short trip to the Ulster Folk and
Transport Museum estate will guarantee a full day's entertainment,
including an early Gospel and Spiritual session in the Folk Park's
Village Meeting House in Ballycultra Town, followed by a tasty Jazz
Barbecue, or buffet lunch, at the Cultra Manor. Then comes the
festival's evening finale when the visiting bands, including
Swedish Jazz Kings, Red Hot Rhythmakers and Bruce Adams Quintet,
will strut their stuff at both the Manor House and the Village
Parochial Hall.
Pick your spot
Perhaps a few words of explanation are needed regarding the
Sunday night performances. This is an occasion when the jazz
fraternity can chose their favoured venue, with the guarantee of
listening to ALL the musicians and all bands no matter which
venue is chosen. The choice is either the Manor House or the
Parochial Hall and the bands will play one set at each venue.
Finally, for now, the organisers have endeavoured to keep the
admission prices for the main events to a minimum, while entry to
the majority of weekend sessions will be free of charge. Included
in the "FREE" category are Saturday's Pub Trail and Library
sessions; while on Sunday at the Ulster F & T Museum there will be
no charge at the Meeting House Gospel & Spiritual session,
nor the afternoon sessions during and following the Jazz BBQ at
the Manor. The normal, relatively inexpensive entry fee (inc.
concessions) to the estate will apply, between opening time and
closing time at 6p.m. Entry to the estate after 6 p.m for
those attending the evening finale, will be free of charge. For
further information regarding entrance charges, the Ballycultra
Town jazz venues and other attractions, visit www.uftm.org.uk. |
