The Bands
Welcome, Michael McQuaid's RED HOT RHYTHMAKERS, from
Melbourne. Opening their U.K and European tour here at Holywood,
this dynamic group of young Australian musicians - all in their
twenties - concentrate on playing jazz from the classic era of the
1920s and 1930s, while presenting a variety of sounds inspired by
such jazz legends as Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Benny
Goodman etc. Leader Michael McQuaid is a talented
multi-instrumentalist, performing on trumpet, clarinet and
saxophone, and is also responsible for the unique repertoire of
the orchestra, drawing on his arranging skills to transcribe
long-lost music from the original recordings. Gratifying as well,
to find a few female representatives within the Red Hot
Rhythmakers ensemble.
The full 9-piece line-up is :-
Michael McQuaid (trumpet/clarinet); Simon Holman (trumpet);
Cassandra Liston (trombone); Joel Dullard (alto, soprano,
clarinet); Lauren Van Der Werff (tenor/clarinet); Jason Downes
(alto/baritone/clarinet); Andrew Nolte (banjo/guitar); Richard
Mander (bass/tuba); Sandra Talty (drums/vocal).

It's four years since the last Holywood appearance of the
Swedish Jazz Kings ... far too long to be the without the
extraordinary talents of six first class professional musicians,
and a band often described as the best classic jazz outfit
around. Understandably, international press reviews place the SJK
in a class of their own and fully in tune with the true roots of
the jazz genre. The band was formed in 1985 by Tomas Ornberg,
mainly to recreate and record the music of Clarence Williams, but
has now developed a world-wide reputation playing Chicago and New
Orleans music of the 1920s.
Line-up :- Tomas Ornberg (clarinet/soprano); Bent Persson
(cornet/trumpet); Bo Juhlin (sousaphone); Olle Nyman
(banjo/guitar); Keith Durston (piano); and on trombone, one of
Northern Ireland's regular and most respected guests, Roy
Williams.
The Rae Brothers New Orleans Jazz Band was formed on
Tyneside in 1995 by veteran musicians Mac and Dave Rae, and has
achieved popularity all over Britain and across Europe with their
relaxed and tasteful ensemble style of jazz.
This sound, known as the "New Orleans Bounce", was made
famous by musicians who lived and played in and around New
Orleans, Louisiana, and first found its echoes this side of the
Atlantic in the British bands led by the likes of Ken Colyer.
On their first Holywood visit the Rae Brothers will be
accompanied by Ian Wynne, a nineteen year old pianist from
Newcastle-upon Tyne. Young Ian was introduced to the band two
years ago and they were so impressed by his playing in the styles
of Mead Lux Lewis, Professor Longhair and Scott Joplin that he
soon became a regular addition the original 6-piece line-up.
Full line-up:- Peter Wright (trumpet); Mac Rae (clarinet); Jim
Blenkin (trombone); Ian Wynne (Piano); Dave Rae (banjo); John
Robinson (bass); Paul Blenkin (drums).

If a jazz listener's list of priorities include flawless
technique, great tone, imaginative improvisation and a big, big
sound, they will find the lot in the trumpet and flugelhorn
playing of Birkenhead-born Bruce Adams.
Bruce has been a winner of numerous prestigious jazz
awards and is a much sought after guest soloist by festival
organisers around the world. In the past he has shared the stage
with frontline partners such as Benny Carter, Al Cohn and Buddy
Tate, while presently performing and recording with his own
small groups and always in the very best of jazz company.
On the Sunday evening Bruce will be leading his own
hand-picked foursome of well known and much admired local
instrumentalists - Gerry Rice on reeds, Ivan Black (piano), Alan
Niblock (bass) and Charlie Burton at the drums.
